House Tile – Master Bedroom, Last Update 2/26/09

After taking off the last week and a half, we’re ready to start tiling again.  We’re not going to rush through these last few areas, though we may want to finish as fast as possible.

Tuesday

Today we moved everything out of the bedroom and took out the carpet.  The first thing we did was get clothes for the next week or so, and put them in the guest room – where we’ll be staying while we tile our bedroom.

After preparing for being roomless, we started moving furniture.  Everything we had in the bedroom was able to fit into the closets and bathroom.  The only thing that was taken apart was the bed; everything else was moved as-is (the dresser had its drawers removed first).

Anyhow, here’s what the room looks like now that it’s been cleared out.

As you can see, this is the room they used to paint the quarter-round before installing it.

Wednesday

Well, as I said we’re taking things slow with the master suite.  Before dinner, we cut the door jambs and laid the first batch of tiles (16 tiles – 36 sq.ft.).  Here’s what that looks like:

After about 40 minutes or so for a dinner (and My Name Is Earl) break, we mixed another big batch of thinset and laid 16 more tiles.  So, for about 2-21/2 hours of work (done before 8:30), we have 72 sq.ft. of tile laid.  Most likely, we’ll get most of the field tiles laid on Thursday, finish them on Friday with maybe a little tile cutting, and have all the tiling done on Saturday.  That would have the grout going down Sunday morning, which would let us move furniture back in on Sunday night (maybe).

Anyway, here’s what 32 tiles look like in our bedroom:

Thursday

Like I said, we’re taking things slower with this space.  Today we only laid one batch of tiles (15 of them, this time).  Then we ate pizza and watched a few TV shows.  This weekend will be the real work time for the bedroom.

Friday

Today we finished the field tiles in our bedroom.  The last 27 tiles went pretty fast actually.  Now that we have these done, we’ll spend Saturday taking care of the cut tiles.  Then Sunday will let us grout in the morning and we can have our room back Sunday night.

Anyway, here’s the way it looks with the field tiles down.

Saturday

Today was my least favorite task in tiling – cutting tiles.  Starting at about 8am I was marking and cutting tiles.  When we stopped for lunch about 4 hours later, here’s what we had done:

lunch break

After about an hour for lunch and an episode of Psych it was back to the tiling.  After getting all the tiles cut and test-fit it was time to start putting them in place.  By 4pm I had all the perimeter tiles down and we’re done for the day!

One nice part of having the tiles down in our bedroom is that now we have the hallway complete.  It looks so much better than having tiles just stop before the bedroom door.  Here’s how that looks now:

Sunday

We have a tiled bedroom!  We started off the morning by grouting the floor which is the last step for tiling.  By the evening, we had mopped the floor a few times and were ready to put our room back in order.  Now we can finally sleep in our own bed again!  In addition to all the furniture we had before, we now have an armoire to house a monitor and speakers for the new laptop.  This is our bedroom media center (we don’t really need cable in our room).

I’m pretty sure I took a photo of the room after grouting it this morning, but something seems to have happened to it.  No big deal, you just get to skip straight to the photo of everything back in place.

Next week we finally finish the entire house!  All that’s left now is the bathroom and closets.
