After a good night’s sleep we headed out for breakfast and then to the zoo. Omaha is known for its zoo, so we were really looking forward to seeing it. It was actually very nice. I think we still have a soft spot for Atlanta, but I am not going to complain about this one. It was a lot of fun to explore. Some of the animals were hiding from the crowds, so a few areas were quiet, but overall it was great.
I have to say though, you could feel the sadness in the gorillas. They looked bored, uncomfortable, and like they did not want to be on display. I felt that so deeply. Zoos are hard, or maybe I am just more aware now of how they should be free instead of behind a fee for us to see. I don’t know.
After the zoo we headed to what Natalie had been eagerly anticipating, the hockey traveling museum. It was inside an old train station, which made my heart happy, and it was art deco, which spoke to me even more. We went downstairs to the museum and explored every inch of it, playing and learning before heading back up to take in the beauty of the train station itself.
One of the fun parts was the statues scattered throughout the building, each one showing a scene from what life would have been like back then. Of course, we had to take advantage of them and make our own memories before stopping by the little fountain drink diner in the back to wrap up the day. Before we left for the airport, I even caught a glimpse of some old McKesson products. Definitely a high moment for me.
