We have lived just three hours from Oklahoma City for four years and somehow we only now made the trip. With school starting soon, we figured we would squeeze in one more state before the rush began. Plus, with our new cars, we were ready for a little road test and it was Matt’s turn to drive.
We woke up early and headed into Oklahoma City, making sure to stop for breakfast before the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. Waffle Champion did not disappoint. I can definitely see why the place was packed.
After we had a little time left before the museum opened so we went to Dead People Stuff. Which is a unique name for lots of fun antiques and architecture components. We wandered around for a while admiring all the things. We even saw a door we’d like to get for the pantry. One of the coolest items was this bar.
The Art District was also very cool. Reminded me of Bishop Arts District or the Atlanta Beltline. Lots of very well done murals
Finally made it to the museum and WOW! it did not disappoint. It was so BIG and vast with art, and artifacts and history. Just wow! Easily worth the trip just for that. First you come into a cast of a statue that is just amazing. It really did set the stage for the rest of the time. We were able to get into the old carriage and that was a lot of fun.
After that the kids ventured and Matt and I ventured different paths. There was so much to see.
After the art you would think we would be done. But no. The museum shifts into the rodeo and cowboy side, where you get to see donated artifacts from movie stars and rodeo professionals, along with the broader history of the cowboy.
And if that wasn’t enough, they have a whole old TOWN! Crazy? Yes. Cool? Absolutely!
Since we ventured alone, it was fun to see where the kids had been.
After an impressive amount of eye candy. We headed to OKC’s Riverwalk. It was very nice and we had some of the best soup dumplings I have had in a very long time!
Long day, but well worth it. Another state off the map.
