Great Lakes Part I

This year for Spring Break we went around the Great Lakes to knock 4 other states off our list; Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, & Michigan. We flew into Milwaukee and spent the day exploring.  Our first stop was food.  Since Wisconsin is known for its cheese curds and beer, we wanted to see just how good it really was.  We ended up at Lakefront Brewery. We can now say the reputation is legit.  That was the best cheese curd we have ever had.  We learned something interesting as well.  We had rented a car and the rental company asked if we were ok with a Hyundai SUV.  We didn’t have a preference so we said yes. Well, we came into the brewery and there was a sign that says, “let us know if you drove a Hyundai” so we did.  It turns out Hyundai Boys is a big thing there and are prone to being stolen.  So we picked a table close to a window to keep an eye on the car.

After stuffing our faces, we made our way to the Milwaukee Art Museum. This was by far one of my favorite museums. The architecture, art installations, and just overall vibe were amazing. Even the high school art that was displayed was impressive.  We spent a few hours there taking it all in.

We had plans to go to Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum, but it was raining and it didn’t feel like the best use of our time.  Instead, we drove around the area and awed at the homes there before stopping for their famous custard spot Kopp’s.  This place was good and popular.  So much so, we just ate it in the car and admired their cow art installation.

Last big adventure before getting a bite to eat was at Mitchell Park Domes Horticulture Conservatory. This place has 3 distinct domes; tropical, desert, and floral.  Each one was extremely immersive. When you thought you were in the best one you went to the other dome and it was just as great.

Our food stop was Spicy Tuna. This place caught my eye when planning our trip because not only does it get good reviews, it’s also known for it’s sushi chef as he creates a drawing with each order with different color sauces. It was cool to see it in person!  He’s also super humble. When the food is sent to the table he eagerly awaits the reaction.

Finally made it to the hotel and we got a little settled before we started getting ready for the play. This play was very unique experience.  This adaptation of Spring Awakening was performed by a mostly hearing impaired cast and it was outstanding.  They did an excellent job of making the play accessible to hearing and non-hearing audiences.  At the end, we stayed for the cast Q&A as well so we got to hear the inner workings of getting this play stood up. Stellar performance.

The next morning we got up and went to O&H Danish Bakery. So this place is something that was a must visit for us. We get the Kringle every time it’s at Trader Joes and we were excited to see all the other flavors they had in person.  It was neat to actually be there in person.
