We headed to Kansas this year! Though we planned for a cold stay, it turned out to be fairly mild which we couldn’t complain about. We spent a lot of time just lounging around with a few trips sprinkled in there. Highlights were seeing the Steamboat Arabia, Legoland, and of course our traditional trip to Cabelas!
Steamboat Arabia was really neat. If you haven’t heard about it; in short there was a steamboat that sank due to a snag. The people survived but all the goods, etc. were buried with the steamboat. When the Missouri River changed paths, the steamboat ended up buried under a farm field. Many tried to find it but it wasn’t until 1987 that they were able to locate it and discover that the clay the steamboat had been buried under had preserved all of the goods that were being transported. The discoverers wanted to share their treasures and decided to create a museum to display them. Awesome part of this whole thing was watching a short film of it’s history and the excavation just to have the lights come back on and seeing one of the discoverers in the room waiting to speak to us. How neat is that! Walking through the museum was a little surreal to see how many of the items on the boat were still in use today and to learn how pain staking it is to clean each individual item. It truly is a labor of love.
Legoland was great too, if a bit crowded. Seeing Kansas City in Lego was cool, especially the entire Wizard of Oz scene. They did a really good job on putting that together. The girls enjoyed their time there playing in the playground as well as riding the rides. There was even a 4D movie too!
Cabela’s as I mentioned, is a tradition and always a fun trip for everyone!
It was a super low key Thanksgiving which was awesome. Matt and I ended up doing a little Thanksgiving mission impossible and took over making Thanksgiving dinner. Matt’s mom sprained her ankle the night before and she took a much needed bench seat to allow her foot to rest. Luckily she had all the recipes written down so it worked out very well!
A plus of this trip was being able to fly straight out of Atlanta. Our flights were short and direct. Can’t beat that! I guess we have found another bonus of living here! Here’s some iPhone pictures of our adventure to and from Kansas.
It felt awesome seeing “home” in the sky.
