Our first visit to Akers of Strawberries was two years ago and we were determined to make it a family tradition each year…. Well, baby bird was on the brink of joining us last April so I definitely did not have any motivation to get out in the sun and bend down to pick strawberries. This year, everything fell into place and we got to spend a nice Sunday early afternoon picking the most perfectly colored, juicy strawberries in town!
When we were heading out the woman at the front told us if we wanted the best strawberries to go out all the way to the back and we’d find them. Sure enough, we walked pretty much all the way to back and we found the mother load! Tons and tons of ready to pick strawberries. We had our whole basket full in less than 30 minutes! 7lbs of strawberries! After our short but hot harvest time we decided to go into their little store and enjoy a treat. They make all kind of yummy strawberry concotions and we decided on the sundae. We might just have to go back for that again this year! It was fantastic! They loaded it with homemade strawberry ice cream and fresh strawberries topped off with whip cream. YUM!
It was a short visit but satisifying and rewarding. When we got home we cleaned them all up, put some aside for strawberry shortcakes and froze a whole gallon back full to the rim of strawberries for us to enjoy. Matt made some homemade whip cream and had shortcakes for dessert before and after dinner! :) It was a fun afternoon event which I hope to do again this year before the season is over, even if it’s just for the sundae.
